London Gazette, Aug 14, 1716 p1.
Venice, Aug. 14 - By letters from Corfu of the 17th of July we learn, that 3000 Turks were landed on that island were they ravage the open country, and destroy the olive trees: That they had begun to raise batteries against the town of Corfu; and that they are supplied with ammunition and provisions Bucintro, where the Turks have built store-houses and ovens. Tis believe the town of Corfu can make but little defence but the two fortresses may hold out a long time. Our senate is well satisfied with General Schulenbourgs conduct. He has about 7000 men in Corfu of which 2500 are militia, but several transports from hence having on board 2000 men were seen on the 3rd inst. sailing with a fair wind for Corfu.
