On 4 September, Vicente Lopez's flotilla advanced to Fort Johnson in search of slaves. In the absence of slaves, he landed 100 men and attacked Brunswick simultaneously by land and sea.
Brunswick was taken and only the Hanna managed to escape, but was captured the next day by Captain Muñoz's Loretta.
On the 6th, Captain Dry counterattacked with 80 men and a cannon, driving the Spanish back to Fortuna. Captain Vicente Lopez repulsed them with the ship's artillery but in an accident the ship exploded.
Taking advantage of the confusion, the sailors of the Litchfield retake the ship but the Nancy is still in Spanish hands. The Loretta returns from the Hanna and reloads the survivors, taking the Nancy with her.
Spanish casualties were estimated at around a hundred.
