Bombardment of Le Havre

A squadron under Rear-Admiral Rodney sailed from St. Helen’s five small ships of the line, six frigates and sloops and six bomb vessels on a mission to destroy French invasion barges. Arriving off Le Havre on 3rd July he took position and on the 4th began a 52 hour bombardment. The town was set fire and many of the French invasion barges were destroyed. Rodney then started a blockade which was to last for the remainder of the year.
