Captain Thomas Fox, of the Kent, 74, having put to sea with a small squadron in April, fell in, to the westward of the Bay of Biscay, on June 20th, with the large fleet of French West Indiamen which he had long been anxiously awaiting. The merchantmen were under the convoy of M. Dubois de La Motte, whose force consisted of three sail of the line and a frigate, a force inferior indeed to the six ships of Fox's squadron but not so far inferior as to justify the flight which followed. M. de La Jonquiere, in his encounter with Anson, had earned the gratitude of bis country by deliberately giving himself to be crushed that he might save his convoy; de La Motte shrank from the sacrifice, and took his men-of-war unscathed into Brest, while, of the West Indiamen, about fifty, to the value of upwards of a million, were picked up either by Fox himself or by Rear-Admiral Sir Peter Warren's squadron to leeward.
