Notes on Action

DescriptionTRN5
On August 31st 1810, the Philomel, 18, Commander Gardiner Henry Guion, while endeavouring to prevent the passage of two storeships from Bandol to Toulon, was threatened with capture by a division of the French fleet which stood out as before to cover the approach. Repulse, 74, Captain John Halliday, with the greatest bravery and coolness, interposed between the British sloop and three French 40-gun frigates which, closely supported by several ships of the line, were attempting to cut off the Philomel; and, after a quarter of an hour's firing, he forced them to retire.
