13th August 1781
Part of : The Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780 - 1784)
Previous action : Battle of Dogger Bank 5.8.1781
Next action : Battle of Camperdown 11.10.1797

The Cameleon "demanded the Dutchman and commanded him to strike the flag, but Verbaan, although much less armed, refused and gave him broadside, which was followed by a fierce and stubborn fight. Up to half ten lasted, when the Patriot with a thunderous violence flew in the air, covering the enemy ship with corpses and maimed. The Cameleon was so irretrievably he reached the English port with great difficulty and had a considerable number of deaths. The casualties on the Patriot left 19 widows and 54 needy orphans behind.
