LT Jacob Read was 2nd LT on HMS Folkestone (44) on its deployment to the Virginia Station in 1747. Folkestone, Capt. Thomas Gregory, departed Spithead 19 DEC 1746 as convoy escort for the Trade to the Chesapeake, entered Virginia Capes 12 MAR 1746/47, and Read’s LT Journal (ADM/L/142) states they anchored Hampton Roads (Kicquotan Roads), lower James River, Virginia on Friday March 13th. Departed Hampton Roads as convoy escort back to English Channel on 15 June 1747, arrived Portsmouth 8 August 1747. Read is not listed as being aboard Folkestone on subsequent deployment to Zealand/Flushing in December 1747.
