Savage was a Midshipman on board HMS Theseus in 1799 and was present at the siege of Acre. He is mentioned in Sir Sidney Smith's despatch to Lord St. Vincent of 9 May 1799 [see Barrow, 'The Life and Correspondence of Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith', Vol I, p. 288]
