John Vaughn is listed as commanding officer of armed vessel York (16 guns + 6 swivels, 116 men) in the "Present Disposal of His Majesty's Ships in Sea Pay" tabulation for June 1, 1745 (ADM 8/024). No lieutenant is listed for this or other armed vessels, so they were probably all commanded by lieutenants as the sole commissioned officer. This gives an indication of what he was doing between his service on Sandwich and his appointment as commander of Whitehaven.
