He was never an Admiral, just a Rear-Admiral as noted.

Please include in the timeline between 1779-1783 SirJohnLindsay's promotion to ColonelOfMarines on 17thAugust
1781---a post he kept for duration of 6yrs until made admiral.
Made admiral on 24thSept.1787,the very day that HMS.Dido was
put into commission,a 28gun frigate.

It must be noted that AdmiralAugustusKeppel,a Whig, was a very
close friend of SirJohn,living not far from each other in then
west London(Mayfair area).Both were at the Admiralty after the
frigate HMS.Dido was ordered and SirJohn was promoted the same day that ship was commissioned on 24thSept.1787.Keppel was dead nearly a year by this time.Sadly missed.

Please note the date of death is incorrect:should be 4thJune
1788 at Marlborough,Wilts.Interred at WestminsterAbbey with
the King's wish.Indeed,Lord&LadyMansfield and 2ndLordMansfield.Also in 1799,Dame MaryLindsay,stepmother to DidoElizabethBelle.DameMary was also interred at the Abbey.

Omitted herein was the fact that SirJohnLindsayKB was made a
Colonel Of Marines by the King on 17thAugust1781 whilst officially on inactive duty due to resigning his commission in
support of Admiral Keppel at his trial in 1779.Also worth checking is the frigate HMS.Dido,launched in November1784 and
possibly named after his natural daughter DidoElizabethBelle.
SirJohn was first to captain HMS.Victory and whilst later taken by AdmiralKeppel,responsibilty of that ship was still with SirJohnLindsay for the remainder of that year.
