He was a Midshipman on HMS Lark, 5th/32, when taken POW at Rhode Island ca. 26 July 1777. Together with William Albany Otway, 2d Lieut, HMS Lark, he was exchanged on 25 Feb 1778. (RI Archives, Governor's Letters)
