17151716In this capacity and thanks to his mastery of Native American languages , he participated in the expedition against the Foxes (his father was then Acting Governor of New France) , an Indian nation hostile to the French , settled west of Lake Michigan .His mission was to mobilize three allied nations , the Miamis , the Ouyoutanons and the Illinois for the planned large-scale operation with nearly 1000 men .While waiting for reinforcements he retired to the Jesuit mission at Kaskaskia in southern Lake Michigan to spend the winter and then disappeared .According to a Jesuit account , he and his men were slaughtered by a Cherokee party on their way to Fort Detroit .Skirmish which probably took place in the spring of 1716 .ref:673
