It is to him that the first maps of the Mediterranean are due , which he raised at his own expense , and which , engraved in 1745 , by Bellin , were then inserted into the French Neptune . He is also credited with inventing a capstan that earned the praise and approval of the Academy of Sciences . Made pilot of the king , at the request of Prince Constantine , for having , with a merchant ship of which he was owner and captain , delivered at Modon , port of Morea , another merchant ship , richly loaded , which had been taken by a privateer from Salé , he served for 50 years in this capacity , and died , November 22, 1751 , at the age of 70 . "
