| 1735 | 1745 | He is the first French navigator to use the octant , also called "quarter of reflection" or "English quarter" , a navigation instrument developed in 1731 by the British astronomer John Hadley , to calculate the latitude but also the longitude with the method of lunar distances ; which allows him to improve the knowledge of the position of several geographical points from which he will be able to remap the coasts . He then undertook to correct the existing maps , as well as to create new ones . For this he strives to collect the existing cartographic documentation on the coasts of India , Africa and China . He worked on this project from 1735 to 1742 . The result was submitted to the Academy of Science , which approved it . He worked for another three years to finalize his work . | ref:631 |

| aft.1.3.1780 | Jean Baptiste Nicolas Denis d'Après de Mannevillette died in Lorient on March 1, 1780 in his 74th year . He still owed the printer 20,000 Livres . In his application for a pension for his heirs , the Minister of Marine wrote to Louis XVI :"This officer leaves behind him a very advanced widow and a brother who was a writer in the Navy and retired from the service because of ill health . It seems from the testimony of the port commander (military) of Lorient that this family is without fortune and that the Sieur d'Après consumed the patrimony of it in his research and his work..." | ref:631 |
