In his application for a pension for his heirs , the Minister of Marine wrote to Louis XVI :"This officer leaves behind him a very advanced widow and a brother who was a writer in the Navy and retired from the service because of ill health . It seems from the testimony of the port commander (military) of Lorient that this family is without fortune and that the Sieur d'Après consumed the patrimony of it in his research and his work..."ref:631
