Rear-Adm Sir J.A. Wood (extract from Obituary) July 1829 at Hampstead, aged 73, Rear Admiral Sir James Athol Wood; was the third son of Alexander Wood, of Perth; entered the Navy at an early age; engaged in the defence of Quebec in 1776, the reduction of Charlestown in 1780. The memorable battle between Rodney and De Grasse in 1782 in which he was second Lieutenant of the Anson 64 guns; later, after his return to England Lieut. Wood was advanced to the rank of Commander and was appointed to the Favourite sloop of war; January 1797 was engaged in the seizure of the Island of Trinidad.
