He was commissioned Lieutenant, Zebra, Sloop, on 29 Apr 1777 by Admiralty (ADM 6/21, p.282); ordered to command Hawke, Tender, on 16 Jan 1779 (ADM 2/106, p.160; ordered to command Fisher, Tender, on 07 May 1779 (ADM 2/107, p.22); and ordered to command Advice, Tender, on 18 Dec 1780 (ADM 2/110, p.141).
