Fotheringham died in late May 1781 on board the Ruby, which was returning as part of a squadron which had escorted homeward-bound merchantmen from Jamaica, as far as Bermuda. He was interred on 20 May to the firing of 15 guns. Source: logbook of Princess Royal, National Archives.
