Richard Graves' initial commission on 24 Dec 1774 was as 3d Lieut., HMS Renown, 4th/50, commissioned by his uncle, VAdm Samuel Graves, CinC North America (confirmed by Admiralty on 19 Mar 1776 [ADM 6/21, p.170]). His next commission was by Admiralty 16 Sep 1777 as 3d Lieut., HMS Panther, 4th/60, flagship of RAdm Robert Duff, CinC Mediterranean (ADM 6/21, p. 312)
