Captain Laton killed in battle with 24 gun ship the Magalena of St-Mallo (Capt. Altanass[?ius] Jollif] on January 2nd 1690/91."our Worthy Cap:n whoe head was taken off by a greate shott". The Montague was weakly manned in that battle, with just 250 men, 100 men short of its complement. [source: ADM 106/410 f.5r]
