in 320 A.D. 300.000 kievan rusians on 2000 long boats made a raid on Bizantium and greek isles, leaving devastation wherever they disembarked. Afterward they they repeated in 626 AD (see history of Bizantium, vision of the Interesession of the Holy Mother of and Notes of patriarch Fotius).
This was repeated many times before Peter I. Peter I had many ships of war, in Baltic, Black sea, White Sea and in Pacific Ocean.
