Unfortunately, we do rather have to rely on the source we have. But indeed part of the reason for British intervention was the scale of the merchant ship loses.

I have no record of a British warship being taken by the Algerines during the period (in fact I have no record that any British Warships were captured by anyone at all between1677 and 1682), so would be greatly interested in details of one, with sources of course.

all you sources are based on claims from british naval personal some of them based but the overwhelming majority are just prestige claims , the algerine-english war 1677-1682 saw the destruction of british shipping in the mediterranean and the atlantic more than 300 british ships were captured including warships With VIPs abroad like the governor of north carolina on the other hand we have no source to check or refute those claims
