Rif Winfield list the Renown as a Dutch Prize, not a French and does not credit the Nonsuch with her capture.

If you read the rates page in full you will understand that all ships, irrespective of nationality, are categorised using the English rating system in force at it's aquisition date. This allows some level of meaningful comparison. The first full English rating system was defined in 1626, well before the date of this vessel, and did include frigates, although the meaning in 1651 is different to that as understood after 1750.

Thanks CY, didn't think about looking across the top. It has cleared up the definition of Burthen. Not sure where the French 4th rate comes from as rate classification didn't arrive until some years later and didn't include frigates? As for a picture, with the 2 sources being mentioned, I'm not sure if I should be looking for a French or Dutch frigate but the French did buy lots of Dutch ships in this period? Equally, the above mentions 'captured' but as far as I can tell, England wasn't at war with Holland until 1652 and the French in 1666?

For what she looks like a web search for a 24 gun ship might help, for what 4th rate means, look at the 'rates' page in the top menu.

Can someone tell me basically what this ship would look like with the only reference being 300 ton, 24 gun, 4th rate? For 300 ton, would this be 80'-100' with a matching beam? How many decks for 24 guns, main deck with 20 6pdrs + 4 4pdrs on the qtr deck? What does 4th rate in 1651 mean? TIA
