Melampus, Carrick Roads, Falmouth, October 6, 1797.

SIR, I have to acquaint you, for the information of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, that yesterday, at 4 A.M. Caskets Lights bearing South 6 leagues, after a chace of 4 hours, we captured Le Rayon, a French Privateer Lugger, mounting 6 carriage guns and 8 cohorns and 54 men, commanded by Jean Baptiste Leonard Gosselin. She sailed from Cherbourg 10 hours before, on a 6 weeks cruize, between the Lizard and Cape Clear, was well appointed, and sails remarkably fast.

I am, &c.

GRAHAM MOORE
