Admiralty Office, 20 February 1798: Letter from Captain Rogers, of his Majesty’s ship the Mercury to Earl St Vincent.
His Majesty’s ship Mercury, at sea, Jan 25 - My Lord, I have the honour to inform your Lordship, that this day at noon, the Burlings bearing south east forty-two leagues, I fell in with La Constance French brig privateer, belonging to Nantz, which I captured after a chace of five hours; she is a remarkable fine vessel, pierced for eighteen guns, but has only twelve six and nine pounders on board, and ninety-six men, copper-bottomed, quite new, sails very fast, and is only ten days from Nantz, on a cruize off the western islands. I have the honour to be, &c, Tho Rogers. [Hampshire Chronicle, 3 March 1798, ex London Gazette]
