Admiralty-Office, October 22, 1782.

Extract of a letter from Rear-Admiral Digby, Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Ships in North America, to Mr. Stephens, dated at New Tork the 4th of September. Received the 18th Instant.

I desire you will acquaint their Lordships, that Captain Purvis, of His Majesly's Sloop Duc de Chartres, in returning from the South-Ward, fell in with a ship called the Aigle, of 22 guns and 136 men, belonging to the French King, from Cape Francois, with dispatches for their Fleet, and after a very well-managed action of about 1 hour he took her, and has brought her in here. The Duc de Chartres, notwithstanding her masts, sails, and rigging were much shattered, had the good fortune not to lose a single man but on board the Aigle the First Captain was killed, the 2 next Officers wounded, with 12 of the men killed, and 13 wounded. N. B. The Duc de Chartres had 16 guns and 125 men.
