John Crookshanks (q.v.) commanded Sunderland in 1746, from May at least through July. His crew mutinied over his refusal of action on July 2 with three French ships that he said were 44s but that they insisted were of lesser force. After a court-martial in September, a leader of the mutineers was hanged the first lieutenant (whose name I have not found) was cashiered, and Crookshanks was relieved of command of Sunderland. “Crookshanks, John,” in Dictionary of National Biography, vol. 5, p. 207 (article by J.K, Laughton).
