On the passage to India, a man on board the Coverdale East-Indiaman, playing with his child in his arms, let it fall overboard. The man, from an impulse of affection, instantly leapt overboard after it, and succeeded in getting hold of the child. While he was making for the ship, however, a shark attacked him – he threw the child from him, which was instantly devoured, and the man got safe on board the ship again. [Hampshire Chronicle, 20 May 1797]
