On Tuesday morning at eleven o’clock, John Herron, William Brown, Charles Barnett, and Thomas Hunter, four of the mutineers belonging to his Majesty’s ship Beaulieu, were executed on board that ship in the Downs. In the afternoon their bodies were brought on shore, and buried in the naval hospital ground at Deal. [Hampshire Chronicle, 5 August 1797]

The court martial upon the sixteen mutineers of the Beaulieu, held on board the Ardent, Capt Burgess, is terminated, and the following sentence passed. This was done on the quarter-deck to give the whole ship’s company, as well as numerous visitors from the shore, an opportunity of being present; the marines being under arms, the whole presenting a very solemn scene, the judge advocate, Mr Hellier, then proceeded to read the sentence: - John Herron, Wm Brown, Charles Barnet, Thomas Hunter, Abraham Nelson, Wm Hooper, and James Keates, were condemned to death; the three latter are recommended to mercy. John Gardner, Geo Penlington, David Walker, W Murry, Wm Smith, John Williams, John Dyer, Charles King, and John McKnight, were acquitted. [Hampshire Chronicle, 22 July 1797]
