The 1st of October, being about three leagues from Belle Isle, there came on a most dreadful squall of wind, with hail, thunder, and lightning. The lightning struck our main and mizen masts, main and mizen top-masts, and fore-top-gallant masts: it disabled our main and mizen masts so much, that we could not carry any sail on either of them, when it blew fresh.
