Bristol, 1 October 1748: By letters from France, to several persons in this city, we have advice that the French merchants are in great want of ships, occasioned by the frequent captures made by the English. On this account commissions have been sent to this port, Plymouth, London, &c, for the buying up of such ships as are offered to sale for their purpose; At those several ports divers privateers and merchantmen have been accordingly bought up, particularly at Bristol the Sheerness privateer, formerly a man of war in the Royal Navy, of twenty guns, &c. And as the sale of the Tyger and Tygress privateers come on this day, ’tis supposed they will go the same way. [Kentish Post, 8 October 1748]
