The Edinburgh Magazine, and Literary Miscellany: pub 1778
A letter from a seaman on board the La Brune, Capt. Ferguson, to his wife in Sunderland, dated in the Delaware, April 15, says - we came hither from Rhode Island with transports, two of which got into the river before us, which the American gun-boats took; but on our coming up the next day to their batteries, they burnt the two transports, kept up a smart fire against us for some time, and at last abandoned their works. We killed and wounded several of them, and knocked down the town around their ears. The poor women and children have suffered greatly, which we are sorry for. This is a large country, and a most stubborn people; they declare they will all die by the sword rather than submit to be taxed by England. Our ship is a 36 gun frigate, was taken from the French in the last war, and has taken since our arrival in the American seas, nearly 70 vessels large and small.
