Lord Duncan’s Victory
It appearing that out of 1023 persons, who were killed or wounded in the gallant action under Admiral Lord Duncan, that the Committee have not, with all their inquiries, been able to find out the following list of seventy persons, or their families:-
Bedford – killed
Benjamin Banners Able Beasley, Gloucestershire
John Soundwell Able Sweden
Joseph Willis Able
Bedford – wounded
George Ferguson Able
William Hewke – since dead Able Hampton, near Bury St Edmund’s

Portsmouth: On Tuesday a court martial was held on board the Resource, of 28 guns, on Daniel Keefe, a seaman belonging to his Majesty’s ship Bedford, of 74 guns, Capt Sir Thomas Byard. Some of the witnesses proved, that he threw an eighteen pound shot at, and struck Lieut Buccanor a violent blow on the back part of his head: he was therefore found guilty, and sentenced to be hanged by the neck until he was dead, when, and on-board such ship, as the Lords of the Admiralty should think fit to appoint. The Bedford, of 74 guns, Sir Thomas Byard, lost ninety-six men, killed and wounded, in the late action with the Dutch fleet, which is about twenty more than what the Gazette gave credit for. It appears, from the report of some of the said ship’s company, that upwards of twelve hundred men were lost to the service in the engagement. [Hampshire Chronicle, 9 December 1797]
