Fascinating to see details of the career of Thomas Beer, born in Devon but later resident of St John New Brunswick, my gt-gt-gt-grandfather: several of his children born in England.
Can see how his son may have formed the idea of going to Jamaica.

My g-g grandfather James Porteous was 2nd Master on Montagu at Camperdown. He subsequently was Captain of The Lady Arabella and later the Magnet, both Falmouth Packets. His father, also James Porteous, was Fleet Pilot at Camperdown alongside Admiral Duncan who it is reported were the only two who were uninjured on the Venerable's quarterdeck. Her subsequently was appointed Master of King George 111's Royal Yacht 'Royal George'.
