London, 23 November 1751: By an express which arrived this morning from Bristol we have the following particular account (brought by the Cornwall, Capt Duncombe) of a violent hurricane which happened at Jamaica on the 11th of September last.
The Gloucester, of 50 guns, the Hon Geo Townshend, Esq; Commodore, rode it out without loss.
The Fox, of 20 guns, Capt Faulkner, ashore, beat over the rocks, and can’t be got off; the people and the money saved and landed at Withywood.
The sloops Ferret and Viper rode it out, but lost their masts.

London, 9 July 1751: Letters from Jamaica mention, that they had accounts from Portobello, that a Spanish register ship, mounting twenty-four guns, just arrived there, sent an officer on board his Majesty’s ship Ferrett, commanded by Capt Scroope, then at anchor in that harbour, who demanded a search for contraband goods, which was positively refused; the officer then went on board his ship, and immediately began to warp close to the Ferrett, when Capt Scroope hailed him, and told them, that if they persisted in in warping he must be obliged to fire into him, upon which they immediately desisted. The behaviour of the Spanish commander was very rude to Captain Scroope on shore. {Kentish Post, 13 July 1751]
