Yesterday an immense concourse of people assembled at Woolwich, to witness the launch of the Plantagenet, of 74 guns, one of the finest ships ever built at that dock-yard. The hour appointed for letting her off the stocks was two o’clock; but it was about half after when she started, owing, it was said, to the number of small boats which had collected near the shore. She went off the stocks in very fine stile; and it was considered by all the ship-wrights as a very excellent launch. At the turn of the tide she will be brought in for the purpose of being copper-bottomed. About five hundred persons were on board when the launch took place; a great proportion of whom were ladies elegantly dressed. [London Courier, 3 October 1801]

The Plantagenet, of 74 guns, launched on Thursday at Woolwich, was built upon a plan furnished by Admiral Gambier, when one of the Lords of Admiralty, and is considered by judges of naval architecture, to be of singularly fine mold, and exquisite proportions. She is upon a large scale, bit without a poop, so that at a distance at sea she may pass for a large frigate. The launch took place at half-past one. The ceremony of throwing the bottle and christening her was performed by Commissioner Hartwell, of the Navy Board. [London Courier, 24 October 1801]
