Hello, reference the post by Mr. Fagan, I just wish to add the following: 09.12.1779 letter by Gov Edwards mentions that guns (number not mentioned) were removed from the HMS Proteus in Nfld as the ship was considered "unfit for service". The guns were placed in static defences (including St Mary's) at various outports by Governor (of Nfld) Richard Edwards Colonial Records; CO 194 vol 34 pg 75-77.

Some lieutenants' journals (sometimes called "logs") are at TNA but some are at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. There wouldn't be an admiral's journal because Proteus wasn't a flagship. The easiest source for the ship's daily activities is the captain's journal (or "log"). The master's log includes detailed navigational information, sometimes hourly, including speed, course, and wind direction, with a "remarks" column that sometimes includes additional information about the ship's operations and sometimes duplicates the captain's journal. Lieutenants' journals sometimes also duplicate the captain's journal, but are a last resort if the captain's journal is not available. None of these are on-line: you have to go to Kew and ask for the original, or pay a professional registered researcher to photograph the entries for the dates of interest. (I can recommend one if that is necessary; TNA maintains a list of registered researchers by specialty on their Web site.)

Before about 1800 the Royal Navy did not keep separate ship logs, only those of various officers, captains, lieutenants and masters as well as admirals journals.
So no, ship logs for the Proteus have never existed.

Was the ships log still in existence or was it lost?

The masters log for Feb 1777 to July 1779 and the captain's log for Feb 1777 to Oct 1779 are both held be the National Archives in Kew.
Go to the archive's discovery site and search for "Proteus log" filtered for the 18C

How would I find the log for HMS Proteus ?? Starting a Historical Society in my hometown,and it seems no one has accessed Proteus' side of the history there-where she was instrumental in the establishing of a Gun Battery,in 1779.
