Gentleman's Magazine Vol 10 1740 p. 126
Letter from a gentlemen on board his Majesty's ship Burford, to his brother in this town, dated Port Royal in Jamaica, Nov. 4, 1739.
We arrived at Jamaica the 23d of October, and were greatly overjoyed to see the Diamond man of war standing for the fort, having two Spanish vessels in tow; one of them a Register-Ship for the Havanna with 120,000 pieces of eight, and cloaths for 6000 men to the value of 40,000l. In the whole the other was laden with hides to a good value. The war had begun about two months before we arrived, and the merchants had fitted out several Privateers, and taken some sloops. Before you receive this, I fancy you will have heard that our Admiral had dispatched the Strafford, Louisa, and Norwich in his passage, to a rich town belonging to the Spaniards upon the Caracca coast, well fortified with three forts; they found seventeen sail of ships in the harbour, all which they would have carried off, if, after several hours engagement with the forts and the strongest being silenced, a storm had not arose, which they feared would drive them ashore, or upon sands, so that they were obliged to make out to sea ?...? the whole town and Church in ashes, and have done vast damage to all the forts.
